Spaceflux Labs: Innovating a Sustainable Future in Space

image

At Spaceflux, our vision is to become the global standard in space situational awareness, ensuring the sustainable use of Earth’s orbit for generations to come. Powered by our global network of optical sensors, we provide dynamic sensor tasking, scheduling, and integration tools that optimise space surveillance and response, enabling effective risk mitigation and informed decision-making in an increasingly congested orbital environment.

Taking this vision further, Spaceflux Labs - based in the heart of London at our headquarters - is our dedicated research division, focused on advancing the frontiers of Space Situational Awareness (SSA) and Space Domain Awareness (SDA). It serves as a vibrant centre for innovation and co-creation, where our researchers collaborate with customers and partners to develop cutting-edge solutions that address the complex challenges of the orbital environment.

The Purpose of Spaceflux Labs

With the rapid evolution of the SSA and SDA landscape, fast, agile solutions are more critical than ever. The increasing congestion in Earth’s orbit requires sophisticated hardware integrated with advanced software, and Spaceflux’s agile product cycle has successfully met this demand through market-driven solutions. However, addressing the complex, long-term challenges of space sustainability require a dedicated R&D division. Spaceflux Labs fills this role, driving sustained research, prototyping, and consulting through a structured innovation pipeline.

As orbital congestion grows, the need to safeguard space for future generations has become undeniable. Spaceflux Labs is dedicated to developing technology that not only enhances our ability to track, predict, and manage orbital objects but also directly supports a sustainable approach to space exploration. By minimising collision risks and preserving orbital resources, we prioritise both safety and long-term viability in our solutions, ensuring that the space environment remains accessible for decades to come.

In collaboration with academic and industry partners, Spaceflux Labs bridges theoretical research with practical applications, delivering innovative SSA solutions that meet today's pressing needs and tomorrow's sustainability challenges.

Customer-Centric Innovation

Spaceflux Labs focuses on creating solutions with a direct impact on our clients. Through pilot projects and proofs of concept, we co-develop technology that meets immediate needs while ensuring scalability and robustness for future applications. Each project is refined through real-world testing, resulting in solutions that validate core capabilities, improve data accuracy, and enhance predictive models, building a foundation for scalable, real-time monitoring.

A recent example is our collaboration with the Defence Science and Technologies Laboratory (DSTL) [see Press Release]. Together, Spaceflux Labs is developing an advanced infrared telescope testbed with Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) capabilities, allowing groundbreaking daytime tracking and characterisation of space objects. This project exemplifies our mission at Spaceflux Labs: to advance SSA technology in partnership with real customers, applying it in real-world scenarios to refine solutions and help clients better define their requirements.

In addition to product development, our consultancy services provide expert guidance across SSA and SDA, from data analytics and AI-driven insights to advanced optical tracking.

Building leading AI solutions for SSA

Artificial Intelligence is at the core of Spaceflux Labs’ R&D. Led by Prof. Ingo Waldmann, an expert with over 15 years in machine learning and AI for astronomical data applications, the Labs have, over the past two years, developed advanced image-denoising systems that remove background noise from optical data, enabling the detection of smaller objects (Waldmann et al. 2023). Additionally, we are pioneering sensor fusion techniques, integrating data from multiple sensors to improve object detection and tracking across diverse orbital regimes (Waldmann et al. 2024).

Looking ahead, we aim to expand our AI-driven solutions to support mission-critical needs, including launch support, manoeuvre detection and planning, and comprehensive orbital event assessments—such as conjunction analysis, re-entry predictions, and proximity operations. By advancing these applications, Spaceflux Labs is poised to redefine safety and responsiveness in space traffic management, setting a new standard for actionable intelligence through Space Domain Awareness.

Fostering a Knowledge-Driven Community

At Spaceflux Labs, we believe that knowledge grows when shared. Our contributions to peer-reviewed journals and leading industry conferences, such as the Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies (AMOS) conference, enhance global understanding and establish standards in the SSA community. By sharing our research, we promote transparency and lead SSA innovation through collaboration.

To cultivate the knowledge pipeline further, Spaceflux Labs supports internships for graduate and undergraduate students, offering hands-on experience in pioneering SSA and AI projects. We also fund PhD roles focused on AI applications in SSA, nurturing the next generation of experts dedicated to advancing space safety and sustainability.
